Let’s hand it down to all the crows in the world for being so intelligent.
These cawing birds have proven themselves enough in terms of being clever and witty.
A lot of people are suffering from all the tricks that crows have under their wings, right?
For example – When they peck at your roof
This time around, let’s talk about how these crows survive everyday in managing their food!
Many animals have their own ways of storing their food, so they can survive in times of scarcity.
Do not be surprised if you see some buried food under a pile of grass, barks, twigs, and other things to cover it up.
It is likely that those foods belong to a crow!
So that answers the question – Do crows bury food?
These black birds bury their food on the ground, so they can have something later on or to simply hide it from other animals.
Like any other animals, they would retrieve it once they need it.
Here’s what you’re going to learn in this article
- Do crows collect food?
- What do crows do with their food?
- Do they hide the food for later or what?
- Do crows remember you if you feed them?
- Do crows store food in their cheeks? (Do they actually do this, find out!)
Some interesting topics to cover about crows
So if you’re a crow lover and want to know how they behave with food then you’re going to love this article
Let’s get started!
Do Crows Collect Food?
You probably know that crows are all-around eaters; they can literally eat anything edible as long as it is not toxic to them.
These birds are also opportunistic birds where they will hunt and go for any food available for them.
But do these crows just simply eat and run all the time?
Certainly not.
Crows are clever birds, so it is completely expected that they collect and store food.
These birds are intelligent enough to even collect and hide food from other animals and retrieve it all according to the order of it going off.
Do Crows Store Food In Their Cheeks?
Crows do not and cannot store food in their cheeks.
Still, it is pretty common knowledge for some people that some birds can store food in their body through their crop.
This bird crop is a muscular pouch located on the front of their neck used to store food.
While present in most birds, crows belong to the bird species who do not have this.
So, can crows store food in their mouth or do they have anything similar to a bird crop?
The answer is yes.
While crows do not have bird crops unlike most birds, they also have a similar pouch under their tongue.
This is called the expandable sublingual pouch present in most corvid birds.
At a glance, it is pretty easy to conclude that there is not much difference between a crow’s pouch and a normal bird pouch.
Crows can store their food into this pouch without any problem as it perfectly accommodates any kinds and sizes.
These corvid birds can choose whether to store food in their mouth, otherwise it will directly go to their proventriculus and gizzard for digestion.
Pretty interesting right!
Crows never fail to amaze!
What Do Crows Do With Their Food?
Crows do not grab any food they find all day and eat it all away.
They will somehow store all the excess hunts and retrieve it for later.
These birds will usually bury their food on the ground and cover it up with anything they can use.
Grass, twigs, barks, leaves are usually the things they use to hide it away from other animals.
So does that mean..
Do Crows Hide Their Food For Later?
Absolutely! Crows would try to eat some of the food and store the rest for later.
They would also hide it not only under the ground, but also anywhere they think is safe for them to use.
Spots like trees, rain gutters, and other hidden areas are their go-to spaces.
These birds can remember nearly everything they store.
From what food it is, its possible expiry date, to where the food was hidden.
Some birds also attempt to re-hide their food and choose a new location, should they decide that the former spot was no longer a secret from others.
Crows are very intelligent birds!

Do Crows Remember If You Feed Them?
Many people say that you should not ever do something bad to crows no matter how annoying they can become.
If you cannot befriend them (If you do want to be friends with them, check out my article how to befriend a crow?) do not do anything rash that would make these birds resent you.
Want to know why?
Simply because these birds would not have any chance in a million of reasons not to remember your face.
Crows recognize humans.
They can clearly remember someone’s face, voice, and even the place they live in.
Here’s the scary part
They are capable of holding grudges against those who harmed them.
One way to let a crow remember you in a good way is through giving them food.
Crows would not dare forget the person who gives them free food anyway.
They will also remember the time you hand out food, your face, and how you act towards them.
These birds will also take their time before they truly trust you, but when they do, expect that you will have more beaks to feed.
Wrapping Up
Crows have their own way of storing food.
They can either store it in their mouth pouch, hide it in their safe spot, or bury their food on the ground.
These cawing birds do not simply eat everything they can in a day and let a new hunt begin tomorrow.
They are clever enough to store their own food and retrieve it when needed.
These corvid birds are also capable of recognizing human faces and voices.
They would remember people who are good to them and those who harmed them, so better yet try to befriend these crows and not make them your enemies.
