Why Is My Parrot Always Hungry?

Being a parrot parent is awesome

Parrots are very entertaining and make such lovely pets

But one thing that can concern parrot parents is their bird is always hungry

So the question is – Why is my parrot always hungry?

There could be a number of reasons why your parrot is hungry all the time

One of the main reasons could be your parrot is just bored so they’re eating out of boredom

This is something you will need to keep an eye on and make sure your parrot doesn’t become obese or eat to such an extent they can fall ill

In this article we’re going to talk about this in more detail

Let’s get started

Why Is My Parrot Eating So Much?

If your parrot is eating too much, this is usually not a very good sign

Boredom

If your parrot is not being entertained or you’re not spending much time with your parrot, your parrot is eventually going to get bored

This is not fair on them because they need attention and this has to come from you

Try to spend a good amount of quality time with your parrot everyday

Take some time out and set out a routine

It’s not a matter of how long

It’s about the quality of time you spend with your bird

That will make a difference

What you need to do is allow your parrot out of cage time

When your parrot is out of their cage, it’s a good chance for you to bond with your bird

You can play games with your parrot

You can check out my article where I talk more about this

How long should a parrot be out of it’s cage?

It’s all about keeping your parrot happy and entertained

Here’s another article I wrote which I think you will find helpful

How to keep parrots entertained

Now I know you’re not at home all day

So what should you do?

Make sure you have a large bird cage

Why?

Because a large bird cage will allow you to add a variety of toys in it so when you’re out and your parrot is in their cage, they have plenty of toys to play with

Another benefit of having a large bird cage is your parrot can move around freely and it gives them space too

But when you do come home then give your parrot out of cage time and let them fly about in the house (Make sure the house is safe before you allow this)

Symptoms Of Excessive Eating

It’s important to know the signs of excessive eating

Here’s what you need to look out for

Obese Or Overweight

This can be difficult to detect

Why

Because a parrot that is a little plump will seem normal to a casual observer

But if you have pictures of your parrot at different ages (Which I’m sure you must have because they’re too cute!) then you’ll able to tell the difference

Here’s the thing though

It’s not about excessive eating that is causing the weight

It’s most likely the food they’re eating

That is why it’s important to feed your parrot lots of fresh fruits and vegetables

Dietary Issues

An all seed or mostly seed diet can be the main cause of obesity in parrots

Why?

Because seeds are high in fat

You should try to replace seeds with pellets because pellets are specially manufactured to contain all the nutrients a bird needs

Also, add fruit and vegetables to their diet as mentioned earlier

Can a Parrot Eat Too Much?

Parrots may eat too much depending how much you feed your parrot

You need to look at your parrots size, take it to the avian vet and seek professional advice

Your vet will be able to tell you how much to feed your parrot

Following their advice, you can then feed your parrot accordingly

Should I Be Worried If My Parrot Is Eating Frequently?

It’s nothing to worry about as parrots eat frequently

You need to keep an eye out and make sure they are not gaining weight

Spend time with your parrot so they’re not always asking for food

Sometimes parrots will keep asking for food because it’s become a habit

Giving your parrot fruits and veg is always a good idea

Why Does My Bird Always Want My Food?

You see, parrots are very good at mimicking

I mean, they can mimic your words

So when a parrot sees their owners eating, they will want to eat too

It’s something parrots do!

So if you’re concerned your parrot is always wanting your food and they’ve already eaten, you should not eat in front of them

That way, they won’t see you eating so they won’t ask for your food!

Wrapping Up

If your parrot is always hungry it may not actually mean they are hungry

Your parrot may want to eat when you eat since they love to mimic

Or maybe your parrot is bored and just wants to munch on things out of boredom

To combat this, you need to set out a time everyday to spend with your parrot

Make sure your parrot does not become obese so do keep an eye on that

Adding fruits and veg to their diet is a good idea and very healthy too
