Possible Reasons Your Parrot Is Ignoring You

It is heartbreaking when all you want to do is spend time with your parrot, but your birdie only ignores you.

For example, you put your hand out for your parrot to step onto it but it just looks away and doesn’t interact with you.

There are a couple reasons why your parrot is ignoring you.

Generally, when this happens, it is because they want to stay clear of you.

Your parrot may act in this way if they are unhappy about something that you did in the past.

If you have acted rashly in recent times, this could be the reason for your parrot’s behavior so try to think back if you’ve done something that may have upset your parrot

You may have tried to hold them when they didn’t want to be held, you may have scared your parrot, or you may have gone away for a few days on a trip causing your bird to become upset.

Ignoring you is one of their ways of showing their displeasure.

Another reason your parrot is ignoring you may be that it is not bonded to you.

This is most likely to happen in households that have more than one parrot.

Instead of the parrot bonding with you, your parrot ends up bonding with the other parrot.

And the less time you spend with your bird, the more likely it will be that the bird will start to ignore you.

That is why it is important to let your parrot out of their cage for some out of cage time

I actually have written an article about this which you can check out by clicking the link below (I mention in the article some pretty cool games you can play with your parrot)

How long should a parrot be out of it’s cage?

So now we know the possible reasons your parrot is ignoring you,

Let’s look at how you can stop this and make your parrot bond with you again

How To Stop My Parrot From Ignoring Me

With parrots, the key words are: take it slow.

There is no rushing with these birds.

You can’t force them to like you and to be comfortable with you otherwise they will just resist you even more which defeats the objective

You need to build that relationship with your parrot in order to gain its trust.

If your parrot is ignoring you, whether because it is upset with you or not bonded with you, be patient.

First, a couple of days

Don’t yell at your parrot and don’t grab it.

This type of negative reinforcement will only make it worse and aggravate its feelings towards you.

Instead, in order to build trust, try offering your parrot’s favorite treat!

If you give your bird treats often, it will start to see you as a friend and start to associate you with positive things.

You can also give them freedom away from its cage.

You need to let your parrot out of its cage every now and then to have a happy bird as I mentioned earlier

And finally, socialize with your parrot.

If your parrot doesn’t want to be with you, that’s fine.

Start with baby steps like talking to them while giving treats and slowly move onto more and more play and interaction in order to build that bond.

Why Does My Parrot Hate Me All Of a Sudden?

If your parrot hates you all of a sudden, there must have been a change to cause this.

Parrots don’t decide out of the blue that they don’t like someone.

It is definitely possible that your parrot may be hormonal and this is the reason your parrot seems to hate you.

Besides this reason, however, your parrot may not like you because you’ve somehow broken its trust with some change in its environment or in you.

Did you know that parrots have incredible vision and they can actually see our energy?

They are very perceptive and will know straight away if you’re in a good or bad mood.

When approaching your parrot in a bad mood, it might not want to be touched or handled by you.

So take a deep breath and relax before you interact with your parrot.

Always be in a happy and in a excited mood when you approach your parrot

Another reason that your parrot might seem to hate you suddenly is due to a change in your appearance.

Parrots notice everything with their sharp eyes, so take a step back and think.

Have you changed anything about your appearance recently?

You might have shaved your beard, got a new haircut, or bought new glasses.

These changes may have your bird react to you as though you are a stranger.

They notice everything right!

Very clever birds parrots are!

How Do You Know If Your Parrot Is Scared Of You?

Birds are very expressive.

They can express a wide range of emotions with their feathers, eyes, wings, and voices.

Sometimes, you might notice that your parrot is displaying emotions that are not necessarily positive.

It could be that your little feathered friend is afraid of something – even you.

There are many ways to figure out if your parrot is scared of you.

When a bird is scared, you will notice it straight away in its behavior.

It will often pull its feathers closer to their bodies and will stand in a corner as though it is hiding from something.

Some parrots even rock back and forth to soothe themselves when they’re particularly scared.

If your parrot is scared of you and you decide to approach it or grab it when it’s already afraid, you will notice some more extreme reactions.

For example, your parrot might hiss at you or make other distressed noises.

If you get too close, it may even bite you out of fear.

Parrots need to slowly get used to their owners, so make sure to take your time in getting it more comfortable with you.

Final Words

Parrots are very emotional animals.

Just like humans, they may feel the need to ignore someone because something is bothering them.

They may even ignore you if they aren’t bonded to you (yet)

The best thing to do if you want to fix this is to take it slow.

You need to work at building trust with your parrot so that you can have a fulfilling relationship with it.

Forcing it to spend time with you won’t do any good.

Instead, make sure you don’t annoy your parrot and maybe treat it with its favorite snacks.

You will be back in its good graces in no time!

Remember – Patience is key
