Budgies are very social and communicative birds who love nothing better than a chirp to their pals or owner every day!
They also communicate using a variety of sounds and physical gestures that indicate to you that they are happy and content or are feeling threatened or unwell.
It is a good idea to find out how to interpret some of their signals so that you can understand how your budgie is feeling.
Recently a friend asked – ‘I am worried, why is my budgie tapping his feet?’
So in this article you’re going to discover why your budgie may be tapping his feet
Sound good?
Let’s get started!
Possible Reasons Your Budgie Is Tapping His Feet
Budgies are very agile and use their feet a great deal.
Sometimes you will see your budgie asleep on his perch with one foot raised, but this is absolutely nothing to worry about because it simply means your budgie is relaxed and happy.
If your budgie doesn’t seem comfortable with his perch, check that it is not too wide for him and that he can grip it easily.
Some budgies do not like the sandpaper sleeves you can fit on the dowling perches so try removing these as they could be the problem.
Keep an eye on your budgie and see if he gives any other clues for example tapping his feet or pecking his feet or legs.
Your budgie could well have a problem and need your help.
Check your budgies feet very carefully to ensure that he has not injured them and if you cannot see anything wrong, it is best to get him checked out by an Avian Vet.
The worse case scenario is that your budgie has scaly leg mites which he will be finding really uncomfortable.
Now the question is..
Can I Treat Scaly Leg Mites Myself?
There is a line of thought that you can get rid of scaly leg mites by using paraffin oil, but in reality this is only a temporary solution that eases the itching, but it does not get rid of the mites permanently.
You will need to see an Avian Vet because your budgie will probably need Ivermectin which is an effective treatment.
As well as the medical treatment, it is good to ensure that your budgie is getting plenty of fresh vegetables that are rich in vitamins A and K as his immune system will need a boost to fight the parasites.
