Do Budgies Talk In Their Sleep?

Yes, budgies do talk in their sleep

It’s normal

Think of it like sleep talking in their dreams

Us humans sleep talk right?

Same with budgies!

Some budgie parents say their budgies laugh in their sleep! Now that’s pretty funny

It’s nothing you should be worried about

Another reason why a budgie talks in their sleep is their way of defense

It’s like saying to predators “I’m awake so you can’t eat me right now!”

Even though your house does not have any predators

It’s their way of attracting less predators (If that makes sense)

This is not scientifically proven or anything

What I’m trying to get at is there is nothing to worry about

It’s completely normal for your budgie to talk in their sleep

Do Budgies Need Darkness To Sleep?

Yes, budgies need darkness to sleep

It’s important for your budgie to sleep in the dark as it’s good for their health and wellbeing

You see, if there is limited darkness it can cause stress to your budgie as lights and activity keeps a bird awake as this is when predators may be present

Birds need at least 10 hours of sleep time which is more than us humans

Insufficient sleep can cause problems such as

  • Stress which can cause your budgie behavioral problems such as feather picking, biting and picking
  • Health problems can also be a result of lack of sleep which can lower your bird immune response to disease
  • Insufficient darkness may signal some birds to breed(source)

As you can see, it’s important for your budgie to have darkness when they’re sleeping

Now during the summer period, it’s light outside for some time which can make it difficult to make it dark in your house

One thing you can do though is get a cage cover which will make it dark

Something like this
